|LTBHS Angel Pet Therapy Program|
Since April 2003, Little Traverse Bay Humane Society “ANGELs” have been making a difference in the lives of residents at local health care facilities.
The Animals Need to Give Everybody Love (ANGEL) program, lead by pet therapist, Jane Balmer, offers residents the opportunity to interact with shelter animals. The program has been a huge success – not just for the socialization of the animals but also with proven results for the residents, including a marked alertness and positive attitude changes following the visits. Additionally, research has shown that interaction with animals can help reduce depression and stress, increase life span and stimulate mental activity.
Here’s just some of the feedback we are receiving about the impact of the ANGEL program:
“Our clients love to cuddle with a kitten or watch a puppy run from person to person getting lots of love,” said Michelle Schwartz, Program Coordinator of the
“Thursday mornings are the highlight of many of our resident’s week here at Bay Bluff,” said Ted Monroe. “Having these visiting animals in our facility helps diminish feelings of loneliness and isolation and encourages our residents to be more active. There is nothing better than seeing the smiles on their faces as they hold a small dog or cat in their lap and reminisce about their past experiences with animals. The Bay Bluffs Team would like to say thank you to the staff at Little Traverse Bay Humane Society for helping to brighten our residents’ day.”
With nearly 50 animals in our care every day of the week, the ANGEL program is a stellar example of the many benefits animals can make in people’s lives.
Please help us continue to offer the ANGEL Program - one that truly makes a difference in the lives of both senior residents and shelter animals waiting for their forever homes.
