Youth Volunteer Guidelines

At Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, we are dedicated to providing animals the tender, loving care and attention they need to become adoptable companions.

YOUTH GUIDELINES

  • Youth ages 15-17 can volunteer at LTBHS upon the approval and sponsorship of the volunteer coordinator.
  • Upon approval, youth can:
    • Support LTBHS administrative programs by helping with mailings including:
      • Labeling
      • Folding
      • Signing
      • Stamping
      • Sealing
    • Help with yard work including:
      • Pulling weeds
      • Cleaning yards
    • Raise essential funds for operations and solicit necessary items on our wish list to promote a safe, healthy environment for all the animals in our care.
  • Youth volunteers must be able to work for a one hour period between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday – Friday. Because we are committed to helping every animal in our shelter find a loving, forever home, volunteers will be limited on Saturdays due to the significant number of adoptions that occur.

Scheduling
Youth volunteers will be required to schedule their desired task and time with the volunteer coordinator either at the shelter or over the phone at least 48 hours prior to volunteering. Tasks will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Becoming a Youth Volunteer
Please complete the volunteer application. Once your application has been approved, our volunteer coordinator will call you to schedule your orientation session. A parent or guardian MUST accompany youth volunteers during orientation. Youth volunteers must agree to the following requirements:

  • Youth volunteers must be mature, dependable, ambitious, able to follow instructions and able to work independently on assigned tasks.
  • Youth volunteers with a negative attitude, careless work ethic, inability to follow instructions or unreliability will be terminated from the program.
  • Youth volunteers must wear knee-length shorts or pants and tennis shoes. No short shorts, flip-flops, Crocks, toeless sandals or any similar shoe will be permitted.

Once orientation has been completed, youth volunteers will receive a badge which they will be required to wear every time they volunteer.

To become a youth volunteer, please contact volunteer coordinator, Teresa Chaney, at 347.2396.
