Lexi is a 4 year old Great Pyrenees/Labrador Retriever mix. She has lived with our family since she was 6 weeks old. Sadly we have come to the conclusion that our home and family are not suitable for her and her behavioral challenges have become more than we can bear. Lexi has the affectionate love of a Lab and the calm demeanor of a Great Pyr. She is currently an indoor dog, spending her days lazing around with free roam of the house without any problems. She also loves to be out in the fresh air guarding the yard from squirrels and bunnies. When the sun is down, she is likely to bark at critters in the woods. She is trained on an underground fence but she has been known to run through it if she really needs to chase away a "predator" (deer) so a physical fence would be best for her. Her natural guarding instincts have proven to be a problem for us as she resource guards her food and treats. This has caused a few incidents of her nipping my other dog and young child which has brought us to this decision of rehoming. She typically gets along great with our Golden Retriever while running around free in the yard together. She also loves our children and will beg them to pet her and snuggle up on the couch together. However, when she is resource guarding, our children do not understand her warning signals so it is not a safe environment to keep them in our home together full-time. Our dogs did attend a 2 week board and train session together last summer and saw significant improvement. They were able to eat together in the same space without any issues. However, when we came back to our home, she went back to her guarding habits. With additional professional training, I am confident that she can improve enough to co-exist peacefully with another pet. These challenges are manageable in our home and we have processes to make it work safely for everyone but it is not at the quality of life that we all deserve and too much to manage with our frequent traveling. I am hopeful to find a new home for Lexi with someone who will love her like we do and who has the time, resources, and/or expertise needed to help her thrive; preferably someone experienced with the Great Pyrenees breed who has a farm environment for her to live out her best livestock guarding dreams! She would likely adjust well to being a fully outdoor dog, if needed. For the first 2 years of her life she spent the workdays in an outdoor pen. Lexi is trained on basic obedience (sit, stay, come, off, leave it, get in) but not a pro at it. She can walk on leash with a pronged training collar (without it, she pulls and is very strong). She is well acclimated to crates, outdoor kennels, tie out cables, car rides, vet visits, and boarding facilities. She sheds a lot but is very patient and gentle with the whole grooming process. She used to have skin sensitivities that she has mostly outgrown but still gets some ear infections on and off. A specialty diet would probably help but she does fine on Purina One brand currently. She is spayed and up to date on all shots. No microchip. I cannot say enough positive things about Lexi.
